Reevaluating My Digital Life
What is this site for
Starting about five years ago I started feeling myself pulling away from social media and the pull has just gotten stronger ever since. I found myself missing the social media I had in high school. Instagram had barely any ads, Facebook wasn’t full of AI-generated slop, and Twitter was a chill place to plug into communities you were interested in.
Social media has shifted though. It’s no longer about connecting people. It feels, to me, like social media is now just a marketing tool for businesses to find customers and for ads to be shoved in our faces. I don’t want you to think that I think social media is useless, I understand many businesses wouldn’t be where they are without it. But, for me personally, my time with (big) social media feels like its run it’s course.
Wait… what is this site for?
Oh yeah. The purpose of this site is to share my thoughts on a platform I alone am entirely in control of. I can post what I want without worrying about how many likes I get. The content I post is MINE, I can’t get blocked for what I write, I can’t have my content changed or censored, and if a company goes broke I don’t lose everything I’ve written.
What I’m doing differently
I’m not closing the door completely on social media. I might try some of the other smaller sites if enough of my friends move over and if I agree with their mission but this website will always be my home base like Naz wrote about. My primary goal is to revisit why I liked social media in the first place: to have a place to share about my life, hobbies, and passions.
Who is this site for?
Honestly, my goal is to not think too much about that. Hopefully my family members stop by to read my updates from time to time but I don’t want the readers of this site to dictate the content I produce. I will be mostly writing about web development, UI/UX, 3d printer/modeling, Computers, my family, and my faith. If any of that sounds interesting to you feel free to follow along.
Thanks.
